First, an algorithmic Dark Mode, enabled as an Origin Trial, to experiment on whether this would be worth considering as a tool to reduce the necessary developer investment, as well as the long-tail of websites who have no intention or resources of becoming dark mode-enabled. Support for the "only" keyword in the CSS Color Adjust color-scheme property, which enables developers to indicate that certain styles should only apply in certain color modes.


Modern operating systems, particularly mobile ones, feature extensive, platform-wide Dark Mode implementations. Dark Mode is the default, out-of-the-box experience on some Android devices, and automatically enabled during nighttime on many more. We heard feedback from developers that one of the reasons why dark themes haven’t been more widely adopted on the web is the cost of creating and maintaining a second theme for web applications.
